| What is Foot-and-Mouth Disease?
Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) is a highly contagious viral infection of cloven-hoofed animals that causes severe economic losses. The causative agent is Aphthovirus, and several serotypes exist. The disease leads to vesicles and lesions in the mouth, tongue, lips, and hoof regions, excessive salivation, loss of appetite, lameness, and reduced productivity, sharp decreases in milk yield, and sudden deaths in calves due to myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle).
The virus spreads easily through aerosols, direct contact, contaminated feed, equipment, and raw milk. Due to its ability to survive for months in cold environments and in the presence of organic matter, farm biosecurity measures are the only critical factor in preventing the disease.
